If I were a child, this rendition of Lassie would probably still move me; there's a bit of tension, interesting actors, and it's in color. However, currently, it feels like just a classic animal movie. While the animal is indeed very clever and beautiful, there's nothing more to it. Perhaps back then Lassie was among the first animals to gain such fame.
