Der Film basiert auf dem gleichnamigen Comic. Die Handlung beginnt damit, dass der Mann aus Stahl bei einer Rettungsmission nahe der Sonne stark verstrahlt wird. Die Strahlung beschleunigt den Verfall seiner Zellen. Mit dem Wissen, dass er nicht mehr viel Zeit hat, begibt Superman sich auf eine Reise. Hierbei offenbart er Lois Lane sein Geheimnis, zeigt Lex Luthor, was Menschlichkeit wirklich bedeutet und gewährleistet die Sicherheit der Erde für die Zeit nach seinem Tod. (Verleiher-Text)

In a cycle where one episode cannot distinguish itself from another in terms of pace or animation, there came a work that stood out from all previous (and subsequent) shows. All Star Superman understands perfectly the weight of Kal-El's divine destiny, giving his conflict with Lex and the world itself a more serious undertone. Even in completely predictable and episodic adventures with Lois by his side, it delves into the depths of the Kryptonian universe as I have never before seen in animated form. Perhaps the emotional power and the pointedness of the final scenes speak to me personally, but if any work stands out above the other contributions to the series enough to be able to work on its own, it's this one.

Ich ahne zwar nur unterbewusst, woher meine Liebe zu den grundlegenden Archetypen der Superman-Storys kommt, aber trotzdem. Wer würde nicht eine ganze Stadt in einer Flasche, Lois neben und vor sich den Tod haben wollen? Man könnte dann noch ein paar heroischere Taten begehen als üblich.
