Maria (Isabelle Huppert) lebt in einem Land in Afrika und führt als weiße Frau eine Plantage, auf der Kaffee angebaut wird. In letzter Zeit haben sich jedoch Übergriffe auf die weiße Bevölkerung gemehrt, was einen Großteil der betroffenen Menschen zur Flucht und zur Aufgabe ihrer Existenz gezwungen hat. Doch nicht so Maria. Sie ist fest entschlossen ihre Ernte noch einzufahren, auch wenn sich dies schwieriger gestaltet als gedacht, hat sich doch eine große Zahl ihrer Arbeit aus dem Staub gemacht, da sie Angst vor den anrückenden Aufständischen hat. Doch die kämpferische Frau will sich nicht von dem Ort vertreiben lassen, auf dem auch schon ihr Vater und Großvater gearbeitet haben. Doch auch Marias Ex-Mann Andre (Christopher Lambert), mit dem sie noch immer zusammenarbeitet, macht sich große Sorgen und bereitet, gegen den Willen seiner selbstbewussten Ex-Frau, die Flucht für die Familie zurück nach Frankreich vor... Kompromisslos, durchdringend, ausweglos, ohne Sentiment und die heute so moderne Menschlichkeit. Eine heftige und emotionale Aussage, die das Publikum aber nirgendwohin drängt.

My first two encounters with Claire Denis's work ended in disaster and I swore that I wouldn't be burned for the third time. But sometimes you are wrong and reality changes. This film attracted me because of the setting and the subject matter, and I must say that although I feel like I don't have to change my opinion about this arthouse director's work, this time we got along quite well. I still feel certain mannerisms in her work, such as mixing shots in a style where you have to search for things, and what is the end and what is the beginning, which are typical elements of her work. Yet with this film, she held back quite a bit, and it's clear that she knows a lot about Africa and this theme is personal to her. I had a lot of mixed feelings about her previous two works, but I didn't get lost in the story with this one. Overall impression: 75%.

Isabelle Huppert once again shows her acting mastery, this time not even needing many words to show herself in the best possible light. Her heroine is strong and human, and yet she is ground down by events beyond her control. Christopher Lambert surprised me even more after a long time; he got a good role and could show that he could act, even though he didn't have much space.
