Die Handlung dreht sich um den Autor Alexandre Dumas und seinen Kollegen Auguste Maquet. Die beiden haben gemeinsam Werke wie “Der Graf von Monte Christo”, “Die Bartholomäusnacht” oder “Die drei Musketiere” verfasst, wobei Maquet im Schatten des bekannten Dumas stand und auch offiziell nicht als Autor genannt wurde. Auf dem Höhepunkt ihres Schaffens entscheidet Maquet, seine Mitarbeit öffentlich anerkennen zu lassen, und ist auch bereit, hierfür öffentlich zu streiten – und das alles, um eine junge Frau namens Charlotte, die den großen Dumas bewundert, zu beeindrucken. Gérard Depardieu is extremely unlikable here, but only because he’s playing a character you’d today consider someone who’s relying only on his family name. I believe that Dumas put a lot of himself into his work. But at the same time I think that if it hadn’t been for August, Dumas wouldn’t have amounted to a half of what he became. This story explained it to me in no uncertain terms and I’m now in the picture. The movie, however, seemed too much like a documentary. Too factual and not entertaining enough, which is a problem in a movie.
