Under no circumstances should you confuse this with the abysmal Niven/Brando film of the same name made a generation later. This is cinema sophistication at its best. March is a playwright married to actress Young for seven years. They are both at the top of their profession. Hed like her to star in his next show, but she wants to retire to their Connecticut hideaway. This disagreement causes a divorce and her subsequent marriage to Allyn Joslyn, a stuffy banker. Fred never relents and wins Loretta back, just in time for her to star in the show that he wanted her to do in the first place. If that sounds trivial, be aware that this is the period of Gable and Grant comedies, and, even though it does not jump off the screen, this ranks as one of the better romantic comedies. If this movie were made today, the director would be hailed a comedy genius, given his own building at the studio, and allowed millions in failures before the executives got wise to him. In 1942, it was just another picture directed by Hall (LITTLE MISS MARKER, HERE COMES MISTER JORDAN and loads more). Arden and Benchley in their accustomed roles as second bananas are worth the price of admission. (Verleiher-Text)
