Rom, Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts: Der machtbesessene Papst Julius II. beauftragt das herausragende Künstlergenie der Renaissance, Michelangelo, mit der Gestaltung der Sixtinischen Kapelle. Widerwillig nimmt er an. Gehemmt durch Zweifel an seinem ersten Entwurf und inmitten von Kriegswirren und Intrigen im Vatikanstaat, flüchtet Michelangelo in die Berge.
