Count Monostory is in Transylvania leading a hard life. His wife is, she feels, nothing else than something of an additional problem for her husband, while he, it appears has an affair with Hanna, a visitor in the manor-house. At the same time, Erzsébet, Monostory's wife, is courted by baron Eszéky, an old admirer of hers. Monostory is off to Bucharest to save his fortune there, but to no avail. Erzsébet is led to believe, because of a piece of jewelry, that Hanna has followed her husband to the Rumanian capital, therefore she seems to yield to Eszéky's pressure. When a despaired Monostory returns, she realizes that her husband is in fact innocent, so she decides to stick by him. (Verleiher-Text)
