Indeed, it's essentially just a classic romance that tries to evoke tears from you by hinting from the start that something will go wrong, that it will be tear-jerking. The heroine and the hero have a tragic childhood and a tragic future. But perhaps because of the Korean setting, and because of the actors, it's bearable and not awkward.
