Despite his wife's disapproval, Uncle Imre, a rich landowner in the Tisza region, moves to the country in order to get marshy tracks under control in the Great Hungarian Plain. Eszter, his wife's poor relative, supports Uncle Imre in his vast efforts. The relationship between Imre, a man no longer young, and the orphan girl, gradually gets emotional. Uncle Imre wants to get a divorce to marry Eszter, but Imre's wife, learning that her husband wants to marry someone else, refuses to comply with her husband's request, although for some time she has been threatening to divorce him. Surján, a peasant, in his anger over a canal which, if completed, would go across his plot, assaults Uncle Imre, wounding him fatally. In vain does Eszter devote her energies to save him: Imre dies eventually. His work is taken on by Eszter and the young engineer. (Verleiher-Text)
