Der Wissenschaftler Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) experimentiert erfolgreich mit Teleportation, der Übertragung von Materie von einem Ort zum anderen. Eines Tages unternimmt er einen Selbstversuch, der katastrophale Auswirkungen hat: Bei der Teleportation hatte sich eine Stubenfliege ins Labor verirrt und nun haben sich die Körperatome der beiden vermischt. Allmählich beginnt Seth sich neben Veronica Quaife (Geena Davis) in einen ekelhaften und gefährlichen Mutanten zu verwandeln. Der Alptraum ist nicht mehr aufzuhalten.
