The idea of Manoel de Oliveira's second feature film comes from the annual Passion festivities performed in a north-Portuguese village. The director and the locals stage their performance directly for the camera, purposely intertwining reality with fictional and alienating elements. It was the level of self-reflectivity that made Rite of the Spring a breakthrough in Oliveira's career. (Summer Film School)
