Ein etwas schwächerer Versuch des American International Pictures Studios, an die stilvollen Edgar-Allan-Poe-Verfilmungen von Roger Corman anzuknüpfen. Obwohl Vincent Price die Hauptrolle hat, wird er relativ in den Hintergrund der Geschichte gedrängt und der Raum wird eher den Nebendarstellern gewidmet (darunter der bekannte Gast Christopher Lee). Es hat eine gute Atmosphäre und ein schönes Set, aber in Sachen Horror ist es nur minimal funktionstüchtig, was größtenteils auf die relativ routinierte Regie von Gordon Hessler zurückzuführen ist.

The Oblong Box is a film that has a pretty good atmosphere at times, which was also the foundation for its creation. It's truly a gothic atmosphere, aided by the time period in which the story takes place, as well as some ornate yet eerie interiors. The main lead actors are good, although Christopher Lee is somewhat sidelined. Vincent Price, however, as usual, handles his main role brilliantly.
