Eine Handvoll Forscher unternimmt eine wissenschaftliche Expedition auf die sogenannte Bäreninsel in der Arktis. Darunter befinden sich Frank Lansing (Donald Sutherland) sowie der Deutsche Otto Gerran (Richard Widmark). Der Insel haftet eine besondere historische Bedeutung an, da sie im Zweiten Weltkrieg ein U-Boot-Stützpunkt der Nazis war. Lansing hat ein persönliches Interesse, denn sein Vater ist damals dort stationiert gewesen. Die Expedition lockt nicht nur den Forschergeist, sondern weckt auch die Abenteuerlust. Lansing entdeckt einen Goldschatz, hinter dem unverbesserliche Nazis, Geheimdienstleute und Glücksjäger her sind, die teilweise kein Mittel scheuen, um ans Ziel zu gelangen. Er und Hedi Lindquist (Vanessa Redgrave) kommen den Nazis genauso auf die Schliche wie Otto Gerran. Aber der Kopf der Bande gibt sich noch nicht geschlagen ... (filmjuwelen/fernsehjuwelen)

Cold enough to freeze the balls off an iron monkey, craggy fjords, huge icebergs and blue yonder as far as the eye can see... This dismal, bitter cold, “miles from anywhere" atmosphere means that you will be glad of a nice warm blanket while watching it. And maybe not just the one blanket. Otherwise, the environment and the atmosphere are the only things that elevate this otherwise rather run-of-the-mill spy thriller with a standard, interchangeable plot with the standard twists that you have seen a hundred times before to an excellent genre gem.
