Die schwerreiche und exzentrische Tabakerbin Doris Duke (Susan Sarandon) stellt 1987 den irischen Butler Bernard Lafferty (Ralph Fiennes) ein. Der scheue, homosexuelle Mann ist Tag und Nacht für sie da und kümmert sich um ihr Anwesen wenn sie auf Reisen ist. Die beiden einsamen Seelen erkennen sich als leidende Sonderlinge und entwickeln eine enge Beziehung zueinander. Schließlich macht Doris Duke ihren Butler zum Haupterben ihres Vermögens. The excellent performances by Ralph Fiennes and Susan Sarandon are undeniably the highlights of this film, which shows how it's possible to love someone unconditionally and ask for nothing in return, or conversely, to play games for a long time and then briefly bear the consequences of one's actions. I guess you can look at Lafferty's character both ways, but the last scene with him speaks pretty clearly.
