Alien vs. Predator

Ein überraschend gut gedrehter Film mit schönen Tricks, mit einem dynamischen Schnitt und einer schwungvollen Action. Unübersichtlich war nur der erste Kampf Alien vs. Predator, der bei mir aber trotzdem für eine Teenager-Ekstase sorgte. Durchschnittlich ist der Film aber vor allem wegen des UNGLAUBLICH doofen Drehbuchs. Das Kopieren von Paul W.S. Anderson stört mich eigentlich nicht. Er klebt aber die geklauten Dinge mit einem noch leichtsinnigeren Klebstoff zusammen. Mit einem besseren Drehbuch und einer längeren Laufzeit wäre es eine ausgezeichnete Unterhaltung. PS: Die generelle "Demütigung" der Alien-Rasse hat mich ein bisschen gestört. Ich persönlich respektiere sie mehr als die schwerfälligen Predators. (08.11.2004)

To embrace Anderson's latest film is, figuratively speaking, not to put your hand in the popcorn, but to go straight into it with your whole body. Even then, AvP is hard to accept. That said, technically there is not much to complain about, the effects are fine, the animatronic models of the aliens are really good, and the film has a brisk pace. But a rather fundamental problem is the absence of two important ingredients in a movie, there’s hardly any atmosphere and suspense. And the script? Everything follows tried and tested templates, without any surprises, and a plot that is transparent and predictable. Anderson's basic idea of the story makes sense, but it's rather dumbed down. Besides, what must McTiernan have thought when he saw that his formerly uncompromising hunter had become a damsel in distress? Please don't do that. The 2 stars are too much, taking into account the fact that I don't like crossovers, and their cold financial cynicism. Now I'm just waiting for someone to come up with a Red Riding Hood vs. Batman movie. That would be awesome! (08.01.2005)

Hässlich und hässlicher, wie ein Freund von mir es treffend nannte. Und inmitten der hässlichen Welt versucht eine Gruppe von mehr oder weniger hübschen Humanoiden verzweifelt zu überleben... Paul W. S. Anderson hat ein sehr lohnendes Thema geschaffen, aber statt der atmosphärischen Mischung aus klaustrophobischer Spannung und dynamischer Action, die das gleichnamige Computerspiel bietet, ist es ein spannender, dann ungewöhnlich vorhersehbarer Krimi mit einer emanzipierten Heldin und einer auf den Kopf gestellten Geschichte geworden. Leider reicht die Heldin nicht einmal bis zu den Beinen von Ripleys zerrissener Marinehose, und ihre Survival-Reise ist zwar mit einigen netten Actionsequenzen gespickt, aber es fehlt an Spannung und der Fähigkeit, den Zuschauer zu fesseln. Das ist schade, denn der Anfang des Films ist recht vielversprechend, aber dann löst sich die Spannung leider in Regimentern von unübersehbaren Fieslingen auf. Anderson hat gerade einen B-Movie mit mittelmäßigen A-Filmeffekten gedreht. Eine angenehm totgeschlagene anderthalb Stunde, aber die Glaubwürdigkeit der Hässlichen (Predatoren) und der Hässlicheren (Aliens) wird durch diesen Film nicht erhöht, ganz im Gegenteil. For a horror movie it lacks even the slightest hint of atmosphere and, for an adaptation of an action game (or a comic book), it’s lacks action. Perhaps only the makeup deserves praise. A boring and uninteresting B-movie that you can see hundreds of on the shelves of video rental stores. Anderson was able to dishonor two legends in one film, so hopefully some skillful predator will find him and exact personal satisfaction for defamation. (10.02.2007)

The Alien is degraded to a drooling hopscotch, leaving the remnants of its sophistication in the original tetralogy - and mainly because of that, Anderson loses again with me this time. While the unsympathetic main characters acquaint themselves with the chilling environment and themselves, it's more boredom than a major annoyance. But when the alien newborn hatches a few minutes after meeting the facehugger, the queen agilely runs around and the predator senselessly respects the insignificant human, I wearily bury my head in my hands and leave. From a screenwriting perspective, it's practically about nothing, but once the film transitions into the second half, it is worth watching. The action scenes are brilliant, and the sparse use of digital shots is definitely a good thing. (28.09.2004)

In den 1970er und 1980er Jahren erblickten mit Alien und Predator zwei berühmte Monster das Licht der Welt, und es war nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis diese beiden Biester auf der Leinwand aufeinandertreffen würden. Der erste und zweite Alien und der erste Predator sind Klassiker ihres Genres - aber das kann man von ihrem ersten Crossover nicht behaupten. Auch wenn AvP (in Anbetracht der Entstehungszeit) bessere visuelle Effekte bietet, bleibt er auf der Handlungsebene und beim Aufbau einer beklemmenden Atmosphäre, die einst vor allem die ersten beiden Teile von Aliens beeindruckte, merklich zurück. Drehbuchtechnisch ist es ein schwächerer Film, weshalb er sich lieber auf Actionszenen und das Vorhandensein von Schrecken verlässt, was ihm auch meistens gelingt. Mich persönlich hat es nicht gestört, dass die Außerirdischen im Film als negative Monster dargestellt wurden, denn obwohl sie nicht schlimmer sind als Raubtiere, sind sie doch schleimiger und hinterhältiger und daher für diese Position besser geeignet. Wenn man sein Gehirn für eineinhalb Stunden ausschaltet, ist AvP gar kein so schlechter Film. P. S. Ein kleines ("unbedeutendes") Plus für das offene Ende! (03.08.2020)

Oww. Utter idiocy and Anderson's unintentional handbook for "How to not make a great movie, or any movie at all". Anderson takes two of the MOST BRUTAL sci-fi creatures and throws them into a PG-13, places the story on the ground, which matters not one bit because the whole thing takes place in the parrot-eyed bowels of some kind of pyramid, and throws in a hodgepodge of characters so stupid and unsympathetic as fodder that you struggle to identify with at least a nearby piece of ice. To find so much as a relationship with even one of them is a task for the greatest masters of empathy, because when they're not commenting on what we're seeing, they're analyzing facts at the level of elementary school children (first grade). The relationship between them is always implied with one shot of about a second and that's the end of it. Another certainly calculated move was to pick from these maximally murderable characters the absolute most nerve-crawling and make her the protagonist and the predator her pet. Then we can indulge ourselves solely on the action, and there are two action scenes... one of them an absolute mockery of the aliens as creatures and isn't worth much, and the other one with the mother of the aliens is actually pretty good (that's probably the one star). All in all, AVP is a terrible B-movie, unlike the decent second installment, but it makes itself out to be a big-budget film and I won't forgive it for that. Dreck shit crap evil. PS: The film contains an incredibly funny scene where a pyramid hologram appears in front of everyone in the briefing room and Weyland says: "Our leading experts have learned that it's shaped like a pyramid." Why didn't any 14-year-old boy get a job on the script… (31.08.2004)

Paul W. S. Anderson has directed another one of his classics, which doesn't really stray from his abilities. It's a shame that the story is unbelievably banal because the duration it takes is otherwise too rich. It needed more thought, then people would appreciate not just the great masks. This film only shows that for the new millennium, Aliens and Predators are lost for now. (20.01.2015)
