Set in China during the "Warlord Period" of the late 20s and early 30s, the film concerns the strange abduction of a New England missionary and a cruel but highly cultured Chinese general. That a Dane plays the main role of a Chinese person, you just have to accept it, this is Hollywood. But if you accept this, you have a pretty good movie in front of you, which can captivate you not only with its dream sequence, beautifully conceived, but also with its occasional action and understanding of the subject. Otherwise, it's a quite powerful story that may not amaze today's viewer, but still has depth that modern romances don't have.
