Der leicht einfältige, buckelige Gotho arbeitet in der Leichenhalle des Krankenhauses von Feldkirch. Seine einzige Freundin ist ein krankes Mädchen, das schließlich stirbt. Als zwei Angestellte ihren Schmuck stehlen wollen, tötet Gotho sie. Er versteckt die Leiche des Mädchens in den Katakomben unter dem Krankenhaus und schließt einen Pakt mit dem sich ebenfalls dort aufhaltenden Arzt Dr. Orla: als Gegenleistung für von Gotho gelieferte Leichenteile und lebende Opfer wird Orla versuchen, das Mädchen wieder zum Leben zu erwecken. Yes indeed, Hunchback of the Morgue is really a combination of Frankenstein and The Hunchback of Notre Dame, but it has that retro horror-historical vibe that I find quite fitting. Moreover, the Spanish women are beautiful, and the masks are not bad either, although they don't really excel. Overall, a good film that pleased me with its concept.

Certainly not uninteresting and with a nice atmosphere – though finding a Euro-horror flick without atmosphere is almost impossible. There are a couple of corpses, a mad doctor, a few rats, and Paul Naschy. I don’t regret watching it, but the exaggerated ratings promised more. 6/10
