During the 1940s, two Brooklyn boys, Jay (15) and Arty (13), find their lives turned upside down when their father heads South for work, leaving them with their stern grandmother Kurnitz and their childlike aunt Bella in Yonkers, New York. In this film version of Neil Simon's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, two Brooklyn boys, 15-year-old Jay and 13-year-old Arty, are sent to live with their grandmother in Yonkers, New York, when their widowed father heads South to work during World War II. Grandma Kurnitz, a dour and formidable tyrant, presides over the upstairs apartment above her candy store, where the boys join their wacky, movie-loving and slightly slow Aunt Bella and occasional visitor Uncle Louie, a small-time gangster. Gradually the boys learn how to cope with Grandma and their new surroundings, but their most important lessons are provided by observing their partner-in-crime Bella as she tries to assert her independence from Grandma by pursuing a relationship with movie usher Johnny.
