Zwei Kinder wachen mitten in der Nacht auf und stellen fest, dass ihr Vater verschwunden ist und alle Fenster und Türen in ihrem Haus fehlen. Um mit der seltsamen Situation fertig zu werden, bringen die beiden Kissen und Decken ins Wohnzimmer, machen es sich gemütlich und spielen alte Videokassetten mit Zeichentrickfilmen ab, um die Stille des Hauses zu füllen und von der beängstigenden und unerklärlichen Situation abzulenken. Die ganze Zeit in der Hoffnung, dass irgendwann die Erwachsene wiederkommen, um sie zu retten. Nach einer Weile wird jedoch klar, dass etwas über sie wacht: 1995. Eines Nachts wachen der vierjährige Kevin (Lucas Paul) und seine sechsjährige Schwester Kaylee (Dali Rose Tetreault) allein zu Hause auf. Von ihren Eltern fehlt jede Spur. Noch dazu verschwinden alle Fenster und Türen auf unerklärliche Weise. Um sich von der beängstigenden Stille und Dunkelheit um sie herum abzulenken, schauen die Kinder Zeichentrickfilme und beschäftigen sich mit ihrem Spielzeug. Dann hören die Geschwister plötzlich eine unheimliche Stimme, die aus den Schatten des Hauses zu ihnen spricht und die mit ihnen spielen will... (Capelight Pictures)

You know those reviews where the author really wants to trash a film and says that it would have been more entertaining to look at the wall for those 100 minutes? This is exactly that. A horror experiment that should have been half an hour long at most. The premise is original and attractive, the execution is also original, but I can’t believe I didn’t turn it off before the end. There are a few passages that work, but in most cases is thanks to cheap jump scares. If we complain about unfair jump scares in mainstream films, I don’t see reason why they should be praised here. In my opinion, you'll only really enjoy Skinamarink if you convince yourself strongly enough before the screening that you'll enjoy it, so that you can then tell your TikTok followers that you've seen the scariest movie ever and be interesting by appreciating a weird movie. But what do I know, I'm not a representative of fucking Generation Z to get anxious about every fucking thing, so maybe the cries of disbelief I'm reading about this film on the internet right now are meant sincerely. Anyway, one star for thinking out of the box, and another for the fact that the filmmakers will probably manage to make a profit from something like this, which is kind of genius (just today the news came out that Skinamarink will be released not only on VOD, but also in cinemas!).
