A uniquely edited film compiled from more than 700 clips randomly chosen from contemporary weeklies. Through this collage, life in the Belle Époque period from 1900 to 1914 is revealed as seen from various different points of view. As the assistant director, Alain Resnais worked on the background research and the final cut. He later called it the first film essay in the history of cinema.
