Geplagt von Schuldgefühlen schart der ehemalige General Umberto Nobile jeden Abend die Geister der Verstorbenen seiner gescheiterten Nordpol Expedition um sich. Mit ihnen durchlebt er noch einmal das Jahr 1928, den Flug mit dem Zeppelin zum Nordpol und die dramatische Rettungsaktion nach dem Absturz im ewigen Eis. Rom in den 1960er Jahren: Wie jeden Abend streicht der ehemalige General Umberto Nobile – weltbekannt durch seine Luftschiff-Expeditionen in den 1920er Jahren – durch seine edle Wohnung mit Blick auf das Kolosseum und kann nicht schlafen. Er wird von Schuldgefühlen geplagt, weil die von ihm geleitete Nordpol-Expedition spektakulär scheiterte und viele der Beteiligten ihr Leben verloren. Jeden Abend ruft er die Geister der Verstorbenen, um in einem Tribunal von ihnen Absolution zu erhalten. Mit den Verstorbenen durchlebt er noch einmal die Fahrt von 1928 mit dem Zeppelin „Italia“ zum Nordpol. Als die Crew wegen schlechten Wetters nicht am Nordpol landen kann, dreht das Luftschiff um und stürzt über dem ewigen Eis nahe Spitzbergen ab. Zehn Expeditionsteilnehmer überleben den Absturz und richten sich in einem rot gestrichenen Zelt auf dem Eis ein. Während sie verzweifelt um ihr Leben kämpfen und ein defektes Funkgerät zum Laufen bringen, nimmt die ganze Welt Anteil an ihrem Schicksal. Doch diese Rettungsaktion im ewigen Eis stellt eine große Herausforderung dar. (arte)
