China zur Zeit des grausamen Terrors der Mandschu-Regierung: Der Shaolin-Priester Ho Kuang-Huan bildet in seiner Kung Fu-Schule junge Mönche zu todbringenden Kämpfern aus. Bevor sich die jungen Männer Kung Fu-Meister nennen dürfen, müssen sie 35 Kammern durchlaufen, in denen man sie in den Künsten des tödlichen Kampfes mit allen Waffen, als auch mit bloßen Händen, unterweist. Der Begabteste von allen ist Liu Yu-Te. Nach Ende der Ausbildung zieht er aus, um sich mit den Mandschus zu messen; keiner ist der mörderischen Kampfmaschine aus Muskeln und Sehnen gewachsen. Liu Yu-Te kehrt zurück in die Schule seines Lehrmeisters und gründet die 36. Kammer der Shaolin, um die Unterdrückung durch die Mandschus für immer zu beenden… (Verleiher-Text)

There's really very little to fault with this one. Great choreography, which simply cannot be faulted. This is a blast that keeps going. And then there's, of course, the great idea of exploring the different chambers of Shaolin. Honestly, I was more interested in the passage of learning than the overall revenge, which perhaps seemed a bit duller to me, as if the climax was precisely in the temple.

I don't know what a neurologist, or even a chiropractor, would say about Shaolin's "head" training with sandbags nowadays, but even Tomáš Řepka would have shat himself in front of Liu Yu-tem :) Otherwise, it has to be said that without that crucial training, this film would be one of the many forgettable kung-fu flicks, but it's the 40 minutes of entertaining and imaginative drills that make it a genre treat.

A nice fight movie that's fun to watch, entertaining, and with really great fights. Badass choreography, long takes, and the editing doesn't lag. The cinematography alone was a pretty pleasant surprise for me. But it's just a fairy tale. A very naive fairy tale that no one can take seriously. As entertainment, however, it succeeds.
