John Wick: Kapitel 4 (2023)

Englisch An adequate conclusion to the four-part saga? Well, I'm not so sure... Not for me, at least. Nothing new was introduced - sure, there were excellent fight scenes, impeccable camera and incredible stunt work, hats off to that. But we've already seen all of that in the first, second, and third movie. The Belgian Malinois, the excommunicado, everyone against John because of an extreme bounty on his head... it has all been there before. What I feel is lacking here, on the other hand, is a deeper exploration of the characters and their backgrounds - why is Killa overweight, why did he kill Pyótr, who is Cain and why is he blind? Who is that peculiar Marquis de Bla Bla, and so on. It's getting a bit dull to watch the whole world being against John Wick for the fourth time; it's just a worn-out theme. And the scene on the stairs? The constant falling and getting back up, over and over again, it was too much, just like the fall from a four-story building without a single pneumothorax or broken rib... Unfortunately, this is probably the weakest piece in the entire series.

Die Seele des Bösen (2022)

Englisch Well, ladies and gentlemen, this movie looked like a meticulously crafted delight right from the beginning. About halfway through, you're blown away by the brilliant twist that catches everyone off guard - absolutely AWESOME! And then? I don't even know how to put it into words, but it just kind of goes bonkers and takes a 180-degree turn, and suddenly it's like a comedy, WTF? And then it's back to horror, and then I don't know what... Long story short, this movie is definitely original, with a lot of perfect details, and the first half deserves five stars... but then it takes a steep dive downhill. However, in the end, I found myself contemplating it for about 30 minutes after it ended, so it actually worked, and why not? I would probably recommend this movie - it's not an Oscar-worthy, but it's definitely something original after a long time.

The Pyramid - Grab des Grauens (2014)

Englisch This movie revolves around a group of archaeologists who discover an ancient pyramid in Egypt and decide to explore its secrets. The archaeologists enter the pyramid and soon realize they are trapped within its depths. They must contend with dangerous traps, dark forces, and menacing creatures that stand in their way. Gradually, they uncover that the ancient Egyptians built the pyramid as a trap for a demon believed to be the embodiment of death. The film attempts to create a suspenseful atmosphere and horrifying moments, drawing on horror elements intertwined with Egyptian mythology. The story is predominantly told from the perspective of cameras, adding authenticity and intensity. The film focuses on a combination of archaeology, horror, and adventure, utilizing the atmosphere of menace and mystery. With a budget of approximately $5 million, it grossed around $16 million worldwide, which is not much considering the expenses for marketing and distribution, but it's not an absolute flop either. The cast features relatively lesser-known actors, with emphasis placed on the story rather than big-name stars. Denis O'Hare is perhaps the most recognizable actor, known for his roles in movies like "Milk" (2008), "Dallas Buyers Club" (2013), and "The Proposal" (2009). He is most notable for his multiple characters in the television series "American Horror Story" (2011-present), earning an Emmy nomination in 2015 for his portrayal of Liz Taylor in the fifth season, "Hotel." The found footage approach, similar to films like "The Blair Witch Project," adds authenticity and brings the story closer to the audience, creating the illusion that viewers are witnessing the events through the characters' eyes. For me, this is cool, although it can be somewhat irritating at times. The group consists of the typical composition: a scientist, a daughter (blond), her deviant boyfriend (aka cowboy), a nerdy cameraman, and a highly investigative journalist hungry for a Pulitzer Price. The story unfolds reasonably well, and right from the start, with some surprising deaths. A very classic slightly heated argument takes place within the group regarding what should be done. The emotional expression of the daughter oscillates somewhere between soft porn and Teletubbies. Soon enough, the group predictably splits into two scout teams, searching for the beaver of courage in the pyramid maze, with a lurking necromancer Jerry and who knows what else. This film is certainly not for claustrophobics, as half of the journey takes place in tunnels the size of a standard student room in dorms. However, what I appreciate is that original mixture of the characters' killing typologies. Review with no spoilers - so further details just briefly - the effects are kinda cheesy, the rediscovered courage of one of the party members is slightly amusing and hard to believe, the connection with Egyptian terminology is educational and refreshing, and there are Indiana Jones vibes with a significant dose of irrational moments. The ending is unnecessarily drawn out, and the biggest drawback is the special effects, which even for the year 2014, are pretty bad. Two stars, and that's it. Bye.

Silo - Truth (2023) (Folge)

Englisch An episode that serves as a flashback for the main character, providing additional context to the subsequent storyline. It's good and helps to fill in some of the gaps, but I would appreciate further progression regarding the unanswered questions about the mysterious force. Hopefully, the initial pace will not diminish, and we will get back on track soon.

Silo - Machines (2023) (Folge)

Englisch The third episode maintains the high standard set by its predecessors. Although the decision to base the entire episode on the repair of the main generator may be debatable, it helps to further develop the ongoing storyline and explores the choice made by one of the main characters to accept the offer of becoming the local sheriff. The episode has a solid plot and action, although there are some technical elements that may not be entirely logical. Overall, it remains engaging and enjoyable to watch.

Silo - Freedom Day (2023) (Folge)

Englisch The first episode and I'm excited so far! I read the book and it completely captivated me, so I was extremely thrilled when they announced the upcoming TV show. The actors were well chosen, the plot stays true to the original, and the sets are believable. I'm looking forward to the next episodes!

From - Lullaby (2023) (Folge) booo!

Englisch This episode was absolutely terrible... OMG... keep going and ruin the entire second season! Can something PLEASE start happening? Ideally, start explaining why trees are transporting people through some intergalactic sphere to god-knows-where, and why the sheriff has bugs crawling under his skin from the guy who hugged him when he was inexplicably chained to a wall in some twisted castle with a music box????? I'm seriously starting to get annoyed that any explanation of anything is overshadowed by constantly focusing on how two lesbians are getting closer again, even though one is obviously straight and the other might not know it yet? OMG, this is going so horribly wrong that I might actually request a refund from Amazon Prime for watching the next episode!

Guy Ritchie's Der Pakt (2023)

Englisch This movie is OK, if you're a total newcomer and know nothing about the actual military. I watched it with my hubby, who is a former US Army Ranger Sniper and has been planning similar operations for years, so I got a pretty detailed analysis of how this movie is a real piece of sh*t. Look, the plot is there, it starts off with a lot of action right from the beginning, Jake is Jake and he acts brilliantly, and the story is good too. But that's all. After the initial well-executed operation, it drags on and you can't ignore the ridiculously stupid things Jake does. Even as someone who has never served in the military, I have a common sense that if I were escaping from someone, I'd do it mostly at night, not during the day. I definitely feel deep in my guts that I wouldn't camp out in a single house in plain sight, because that would be like punching somebody in the face. This really bothered me because I was really excited based on the ratings, and Guy Ritchie usually pays attention to every last detail in his movies...but unfortunately not here. He should have fired his military advisor right away and maybe tried to make a fantasy movie instead, where he wouldn't need to rely on facts. However, I do appreciate the clear message of the movie and I like it - honoring the Afghan translators who helped the US and their total fuck-up after their withdrawal, leaving them at the mercy of the returning Taliban government. For that and the 10-second action with the Angel of Death, I give it two stars and nothing more.

From - This Way Gone (2023) (Folge)

Englisch So the fourth episode and once again it's completely unnecessary and shitty. The series started off great, but these last two episodes are such a huge waste of time. I'm going to have to force myself to watch the next one. Why can't someone understand that we want to slowly unravel all the fucked-up things that are happening? We don't care about how much two lesbians love each other or about someone's inner struggle because their dad died and who should pay for it or not. Actually, we do learn something here, and that's that Victor gets colored pencils from Ethan. Cool, bro.
