Nova: Hitler's Sunken Secret (2005)

Englisch To be frank, the path to the conclusion of this nearly hour-long documentary is desperately laborious and ultimately unnecessary. We watch a lengthy effort to retrieve cargo from a sunken ship, with the creators having the cargo list the entire time and knowing full well that it wasn't significant from a military standpoint. The commentary on the screen says, "We are witnessing an attempt to uncover the last great secret of World War II..." German nuclear research during the war is well-documented, and a documentary on the Nazis' attempt to build a nuclear bomb would have to look completely different. It's a superficial endeavor. Overall rating: 25%.

Kanárská spojka (1993) booo!

Englisch The most interesting thing - actually, the only interesting thing - is where Ivo Trajkov found the money for such a mess, because any producer who supports something like this clearly demonstrates their incompetence. It's also interesting to ponder where the actors' judgment went, as the cast is above average. It's a waste of time on every level. Overall rating: 0%.

Rukama nevinnosti (1995) (Fernsehfilm)

Englisch Thanks to Stanislav Zindulka's acting abilities, it's passable, but otherwise, it's a completely average TV production about an aging insurance agent who, before retirement, doesn't know what to do with his free time and compensates for his dysfunctional marriage by playing at being a private detective. In his pursuits, he makes a mistake... Overall impression: 50%.

Čest a sláva (1968)

Englisch An unjustly overlooked film, one of the products of the liberated creative atmosphere of the late 1960s. Its strong points are the dialogues and the concise length of the film. It's a masterful performance by three great personalities - Rudolf Hrušínský, Blanka Bohdanová and Karel Höger. History is presented without embellishments, nationalistic, or revivalist myths. It's just a pity the film isn't in color. Overall impression: 90%.

Svatba upírů (1993)

Englisch Yes, I know this isn't great art; some jokes are quite cheap, Hrušínský doesn't hold a candle to his grandfather, Iveta Bartošová has about as much to do with acting as I do with being a cardinal in the Roman Catholic Church, and the plot is blatantly stolen from Polanski. Nevertheless, I like this film and believe it has a decent entertainment potential. Petr Nárožný and especially Viktor Preiss, who is rarely cast in films, relish their roles, and Luděk Kopřiva is much more acceptable to me in this film than in Troška's rural comedies. Overall impression: 60%.

Der Musterschüler (1998)

Englisch I paradoxically liked the film more than the book because it simplified the storyline and didn't "overdo it," making both anti-heroes much more civilized and natural in their depravity. Ian McKellen plays his fascist veteran brilliantly, and Brad Renfro is truly an apt pupil... The film maintains a modest line, with (almost) no affected scenes. The mutual probing of both adversaries and accomplices at the same time is a subtle psychological game that culminates in the final scene of complete transformation. Overall impression: 90%.

Stephen Kings Misery (1990)

Englisch An excellent psychological thriller, probably the 4th best among the countless film adaptations of Stephen King's literary works (after The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Shining). In our country, it is a rather underappreciated film that barely made a splash in movie theaters. Yet, such a carefully crafted atmosphere is rarely seen. It's the role of a lifetime for Kathy Bates. The line, "I'm your number one fan," stayed with me for a long time... Overall impression: 90%.

Der Leichenverbrenner (1968)

Englisch One of the ten most significant Czech films of all time, with the best direction by Juraj Herz and the strongest performance by Rudolf Hrušínský on screen. The gradual and subtle transformation of a model small-town citizen into a collaborator and fascist is also a reminder of many Czech fates during the authoritarian Second Republic and the occupation (Moravec), as well as a foreshadowing of the shift in attitudes of our elites during the normalization period. It is no wonder that this film had a rough ride... Excellent work with detail, camera, and especially editing. The morbid atmosphere is understandably not for everyone, but it is outstanding filmmaking through and through. Overall impression: 100%.

Die Biene Maja (1975) (Serie)

Englisch Just as adults need soap operas to have an excuse to avoid sex with their partners, parents need Maya the Bee to temporarily get rid of their kids as proof of the failure of their parenting methods. That's the better side of multipart fairy tale series like Maya. Unfortunately, in terms of script quality, pacing, dialogues, and prolonged length, it's not great, and not even the excellent dubbing from a time before it was ruined by haste and commercialism can save it. Since I don't let nostalgia sway me, my overall rating remains at 45%.

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Englisch A stylishly polished spectacle, perhaps the most visually interesting piece by Tim Burton. The choice of props and sets, along with the makeup of the actors and the lighting of scenes, intentionally creates an almost theatrical atmosphere, paying homage to the classic horror films of the 1930s. Excellent performances by Johnny Depp, the devilishly repulsive Christopher Walken, and the sweetly fragile Christina Ricci. The charming jokes shamelessly belittle my beloved rational enlightenment and pay tribute to the world of myths and fairy tales. Overall impression: 95%.
