Pátek není svátek (1979)

Englisch A folk comedy, critiquing the widely spread misdeeds of the time in the style of local satire, designed to make the audience laugh while avoiding the core issues. Thanks to a decent cast, it's a tolerable affair, with memorable performances by Petr Kostka and Jorga Kotrbová. Overall impression: 45%.

Der Schakal (1973)

Englisch A film from the times when the quality of the screenplay and director were decisive, not the budget and the amount of digital special effects. Coldly and with distance, almost in a documentary style, a crime drama of the preparations and execution of an assassination, based on real events was made. The assassination of French President de Gaulle is mentioned at the beginning of Fred Zinnemann's film. The secret army organization indeed hired another killer back then, but the assassination did not take place due to police raids. Frederick Forsyth plays interestingly with these motifs and his book is among the best that has been written in the genre. The film does not disgrace the book, although it is naturally a different medium, so the story is somewhat simplified. A hired killer only needs a rifle with a good scope and the anonymity of the metropolis to commit the crime. He does not need a complicated conspiracy, destructive weapons, and crazy plot twists like the film's pathetic remake. A very good performance by Edward Fox in the lead role and professional direction. Overall impression: 85%.

ABBA - The Movie (1977)

Englisch ABBA's music was a big part of my childhood, and I associated this film with their best songs. However, to be honest, the film offers nothing beyond those songs. The script is weak, and the story is almost non-existent, serving only as a flimsy bridge between musical numbers. For a documentary, it is too staged. Overall impression: 40%.

Chocolat - Ein kleiner Biss genügt (2000)

Englisch A nice, sweet, and fragrant film - no surprise, given the abundance of chocolate... Of course, the film can be criticized for being overly polished and having a happy ending; it's evidently a sugary film, but that's Lasse Hallström's style - one shouldn't expect a dark film from him. And every once in a while, it doesn't hurt to indulge in sweets or a romantic film of this kind. Especially when it stars Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp... Overall impression: 85%.

Contact (1997)

Englisch Contact is certainly not as shallowly appealing as the famous Zemeckis Back to the Future trilogy, but in the director's filmography and the genre of sci-fi films, it occupies an even more important place. Zemeckis proved that it was possible to make an audience-friendly sci-fi film without cheap genre props and action scenes. Zemeckis is constantly involved in the field of scientific theories and his world vision of contact with extraterrestrial civilization has a realistic basis. The driving forces of the film are dramatic, well-written dialogues, convincingly portrayed character psychology, impressive plot twists, and clever film ideas. The film is very well cast and also well-acted. The budget is adequate for the demanding artistic vision, and Zemeckis luckily had a reputation from previous successful films and was able to impress the producers. Overall impression: 80%.

Bowling for Columbine (2002)

Englisch If Michael Moore had avoided his usual pitfalls - oversimplification, fabrication, and mystification - it would be a solid five-star film because the subject matter he tackles is extremely poignant in America, and most of the information hits painfully close to home. Overall impression: 75%. A viewer-friendly documentary, albeit in a somewhat populist package.

The Puppet Masters (1994)

Englisch This adaptation of one of the most significant and famous novels by Robert A. Heinlein, a renowned classic of the sci-fi genre, unfortunately did not turn out well. It desperately lacks atmosphere. Heinlein wrote his novel during the Cold War as a certain parallel to the hysteria of that time concerning spy mania, and the novel can be understood as a metaphor for the witch hunts. This theme had much more potential, and even some cheap, yet professionally made B-movies come out better in comparison. The main characters lack charisma, and the biggest star here is Donald Sutherland, who, by the way, is not that dazzling of an actor. In terms of script, direction, and acting performances, it's a bland affair that is mostly boring. However, Greg Cannom's special effects are decent. Overall impression: 50%.

M.A.S.H. (1970)

Englisch The big problem with Robert Altman's M*A*S*H is that the vast majority of viewers saw it only after becoming fans of the famous TV series. While the series took inspiration from Altman's film, it is a completely different style, format, and genre. So, those looking for the pleasant humor of the TV series will be quite disappointed. The TV M.A.S.H was a mainstream affair, a pleasant break with an anti-war message, designed for the broadest audience, whereas Altman created a cynical film about the misery that war leaves on people. As a comedy, it doesn't work very well in my opinion, but as an absurd war story about people frustrated by the insane conditions they must endure, it's a strong piece. The main character is a cynic who just wants to have fun, survive, and forget. He's simply not the likable guy we know from the series. Overall impression: 60%.

In der Stille der Nacht (1982)

Englisch A horror-tinged crime thriller that tries to follow in the footsteps of Hitchcock's classic works. It has a decent script and, above all, a quality cast, with Meryl Streep bringing a refreshing touch thanks to her high level of acting professionalism, especially since she hasn't played many similar roles. Overall impression: 75%. Several scenes from the film are definitely memorable.

Vergiss mein nicht! (2004)

Englisch In a word, a smart film, bolstered by a script from arguably the best and most creative contemporary Hollywood screenwriter, Andy Kaufman, and featuring clever, imaginative direction and an excellent cast. This film is reminiscent of the best Czechoslovak parodies and fantastic films of the 1970s. Playful, intelligent filmmaking. Overall impression: 85%.
