Meg (2018)

Englisch Entertaining idiocy about a bloodthirsty prehistoric shark, in which Statham sings the same tune as Dory in Finding Nemo. The tricks are solid and the B-movie screenplay is supported by essential crutches such as a whining black guy, a bothersome billionaire and the requisite love story. But the movie also has a British joker up its sleeve who used to be a professional swimmer and saves everything, including the movie. I enjoyed it.

Joker (2019)

Englisch Todd Phillips is the man (who would have guessed). He masterfully works with the viewer's sympathy for the title character. Joker is almost unpleasant to watch in places. I’m surprised it’s so popular. The duplicity of the movie trips it up slightly. It’s too comic-bookish for a social drama and too indie for a comic-book adaptation, but maybe I’m just old-fashioned and this is the right way to reach today’s audience. And part of the message is just that. Popularization of serious topics for the masses in practice. Phoenix’s performance is incredible, as he literally embodies his role. The vast majority of the movie’s unpleasantness stems from his acting performance. The supporting characters (King of Comedy) only underpin his brilliance. The somber music interspersed with regular happy songs add to the picturesque image of a city in decay. I’m sorry that it didn’t end with the jig on the car; the epilogue is a little redundant. And now a question for you: did you pity him, did you despise him, or did you want to go and join him?

Anna - Die Agentin (2019)

Englisch A stylish action movie with an atomic blonde in the role of a brilliant spy. High-octane fun with breathtaking choreography and a perfect team of actors in the supporting roles. It’s just the kind of nonsense that, despite being terribly naïve, was made with such gusto that you’re going to want to watch it more than many an Oscar winner. Besson’s still got it.

In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)

Englisch A time-travel chase movie just like I like them, with a quality cast and an intriguing plot in the style of Predestination. If you know the rules of the genre, you will probably appreciate the quality atmosphere. Mickle’s individual style gives it a Terminator-like stamp of reality. The synthesizer soundtrack is good to hear, and it's good to see Dexter in one of the supporting roles. The concept of killing thoughts in their incipient stage is cool, but also very dangerous. Who is going to determine what is ok to think and what isn’t?

Disenchantment - Stairway to Hell (2019) (Folge)

Englisch All's well that ends well. Personally, I think this is where the first season should have ended, because it was a bit harder to get a grip on the plot. Hell's as rotten as Luci.

Begabt - Die Gleichung eines Lebens (2017)

Englisch A small-scale drama in which Captain America looks after an intellectually gifted young girl. The scenes from the court case are held together by nice stories from life in the country and solving the most complicated mathematical equations possible. McKenna plays Grace wonderfully and Evans shows that he not only throws a good shield, but he can manage more demanding tests. You will shed a tear at the end.

The Loudest Voice - 1995 (2019) (Folge)

Englisch This packs a good punch. It grabs you from the very first sigh and doesn’t let go. Crowe is captivating. In-depth knowledge of business and human nature plays the central role here. This is certainly no The Newsroom, that was utopia, this is real life.

Ad Astra – Zu den Sternen (2019)

Englisch Coppola’s Apocalypse Now in a sci-fi guise, with the same structure and the same orientation points. Gray’s tribute to the master. The same as the book by Conrad that it’s based on, this is a story of the essence of man and our role in the environment in which we live. The result isn’t the same, but that doesn’t matter. The journey to find your father is more important than the destination. There is no lack of action scenes and Hoyte van Hoytema outdoes himself again. Visually, it is like manna for the eyes. Pitt’s voiceover as the guide with a mental state of stoic calm, who doesn’t like people, works excellently. As does the father figure veiled in secrets, played by Tommy Lee Jones. The universality of this story about loneliness is made more intense by the emptiness of space. The laws of physics are not too important here. Despite all the big scenes, it’s an extremely low-key movie. A meditative masterpiece that isn’t for everybody, but few people will walk away completely unsatisfied.

Aladdin (2019)

Englisch Those modern western values involving strong women are quite weird in an Arabian fairy-tale, but here we are. Ritchie’s visually captivating version of the classic Disney movie moves along nicely, and the only weak point is the songs, which are more numerous than even in the animated original. Smith is great, Aladdin is quite a nice guy and Jasmine is a fox. P.S. Was the controversy because Will played the slave or or because the slave was blue?

ES: Kapitel 2 (2019)

Englisch The reason that the book It was so exceptional was that it linked the past and the present and their simultaneous build-up, which is logically missing in the movies. A miniseries would be the right medium for an adaptation. But if I have to evaluate how the adult Losers did the second time around, it wasn’t so bad. That the cast is excellent is obvious from the outset in the restaurant scene, where everyone thinks back to their young selves. The problem begins with the approaching climax and the compromises in relation to the book (they make a mush out of it), but they make sense from a visual point of view. The change in the origin of the evil that the clown represents is probably the most painful. And the spider should look like a spider – it’s scarier that way. But the biggest problem is the length, because even though the movie is dreadfully long, a couple more minutes would have been fine… It should have been a miniseries.
