Biografie
R.J. Cutler is an award-winning director and producer whose more than 20 year career spans film, television and theatre. Among the high profile feature documentaries he has produced and directed are the critically acclaimed "The September Issue," which screened in competition at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009, and "The World According to Dick Cheney," which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013.
Cutler also produced the landmark documentary "The War Room," which was nominated for an Academy Award in 1993 and garnered accolades from numerous critics' organizations, including Best Documentary of the Year from the National Board of Review.
An early pioneer in non-fiction television, Cutler won the first Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Program in 2001 and was nominated again in 2002 for directing the Fox/PBS series "American High." Cutler previously earned a News & Documentary Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing in 1998 for "A Perfect Candidate."
Between 2000 and 2010, Cutler executive produced more than twenty non-fiction television series and specials, including Showtime's "Freshman Diaries," which he also directed, and FX's "30 Days."
In 2013, Cutler received the Television Academy Honors Award for "creating television with a conscience." He received the same award in 2009. Also in 2009, the Museum of Television and Radio held a five-day retrospective in celebration of Cutler's work.
The Harvard graduate began his career as a theater director and was the first director selected to participate in the New York Drama League's Director's Apprenticeship Program. He worked as a director and producer at the American Repertory Theater and served as Resident Director at New Dramatists. Among the numerous productions he directed was the world premiere of "Right Behind the Flag" by Kevin Heelan at Playwrights Horizons, starring Kevin Spacey.
Cutler won a Peabody Award in 1990 for producing the National Public Radio show "Heat."
