Naomi Fontaine

Biografie

Naomi Fontaine was born in Uashat, an Innu community within the city of Sept-Îles and a small bay of the St. Lawrence River. She went back to her community to teach for three years after completing her university studies in Quebec City. She holds her community close to her heart, prompting her to write about Innu faces and what their eyes have seen.

In 2011, her first novel, Kuessipan, a collection of poetic stories, was published by Éditions Mémoire d’encrier. Translated into English and published in France, it went on to receive rave reviews from critics and the public, earning her a nomination for the prestigious Prix des cinq continents de la francophonie award. Naomi was also one of three directors of Tracer un chemin, Meshkanatsheu, an anthology of Indigenous writing. Her second novel, Manikanetish, was published in 2017 by Éditions Mémoires d’encrier and is as popular as her first.
