Biografie

He was born in Plzeň in 1904 and passed away in 1959 in Prague. His parents were musicians and he graduated from the Prague Conservatory. In addition to his musical and theoretical work, E. F. Burian focused on theatre in the 1920s and soon became one of the most important Czech artists in modern theatre. He collaborated with the Liberated Theatre, among others, and at the end of 1933 he founded his own D 34 (the number changed according to the current year). As a communist, he actively participated in political life. He was arrested by the Nazis in 1940 and spent the rest of the war in Nazi jails and concentration camps. There, his political views were radicalized and he became a convinced representative of the Communist regime after the war. He directed two feature films – the pre-war Věra Lukášová and post-war We want to live!
