Biografie

Born in 1925 in Paris, he was a painter by vocation, so he studied Decorative Arts and Fine Arts. In 1955 he began in the theatre and dedicated the rest of his life to cinema. In 1969 he directed his first film titled L'enfance nue, with non-professional actors, which was shown at Venice and received the Jean Vigo Award. Then he directed titles such as Nous ne vieillirons pas ensemble (1972), La gueule ouverte (1974), Loulou (1980), A nos amours (1983) and Sous le soleil du Satan (1987), with which he won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. In 1991, he released Van Gogh, thus paying tribute to the Dutch painter whom he had admired deeply since he studied Decorative Arts. His last film was Le Garçu (1995). He died in Paris at 77 (2003), from kidney failure.
