Julie Bertuccelli first worked as an assistant director for Otar Iosseliani, Rithy Panh, Krysztof Kieslowsky, Emmanuel Finkiel or Bertrand Tavernier, before launching her career as a director in 1993. Her very human gaze first revealed itself in a dozen documentaries broadcast on Arte, France 3 and France 5. Her works have received many awards, one of which is the Heritage Prize for La Fabrique des Juges (Judge Factory) at the Cinéma du Réel film festival. Among her most significant works are Bienvenue au Grand Magasin (Welcome to the Department Store, 1999), a "documentary comedy" dealing with the daily life of Galeries Lafayette employees as well as her portrait of Otar Iosseliani, Le Merle Siffleur (The Whistling Blackbird, 2006), which was shown at the New York and Locarno film festivals, among others.
Yet, it is her fiction work that made her known by the public. In 2003, she directed her first feature film Depuis qu'Otar est parti...(Since Otar Left), which won the Critics' Week Grand Prize in Cannes 2003, the Caesar award for best first film, the Marguerite Duras prize and Michel D'Ornano prize. Her second feature film, L'Arbre (The Tree) shot in Australia, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, was presented as part of the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival in 2010, during the closing ceremony.
