Biografie
Joanna Lumley is an Award winning actress, model, writer and charity worker. In 2015 she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Prize at Women in Film and TV Awards and in 2013 she was awarded the Special Recognition Award from the National Television Awards.
Her on-screen fame began in 1969 when she starred as a Bond girl in ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. She played a key role in "The New Avengers", for which she shared a BAFTA Special Award with Honor Blackman, Diana Rigg and Linda Thorson. Her rise to fame continued as she went on to feature in perhaps her most famous and successful show to date, Absolutely Fabulous, starring alongside Jennifer Saunders, for which she won two BAFTA TV awards for Best Comedy Performance and Best Light Entertainment Performance in 1992.
Lumley's early films include SOME GIRLS DO, two Pink Panther films, THE TRIAL OF THE PINK PANTHER and THE CURSE OF THE PINK PANTHER, THE SATANIC RIGHTS OF DRACULA and SHIRLEY VALENTINE. Her most recent films include Thea Sharrock's ME BEFORE YOU, Martin Scorsese's THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, Duncan Ward's BOOGIE WOOGIE, Tim Burton's CORPSE BRIDE, Dave Borthwick's MAGIC ROUNDABOUT, Tommy O'Havel's ELLA ENCHANTED, Peter Bogdanovich's THE CAT'S MEOW, and Henry Selick's JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH.
Lumley's early television work includes "Steptoe and Son", "The Persuaders", "General Hospital", "Coronation Street", "Up the Workers", "The Weather in the Streets", "Mistral's Daughter", "The Perfect Hero", "Love Joy", "Mirror Ball", "Up In Town", "Dr.Willoughby", "Nancherrow", "A Rather English Marriage", "Sensitive Skin", "Marple" and "Coming Home". Her most recent television credits include starring opposite David Walliams in "David Walliams and Friend" sketch show, and presenting the following documentaries "Joanna Lumley: Elvis and Me", "Joanna Lumley's Trans Siberian Adventure", "Joanna Lumley's Greek Odyssey", "Joanna Lumley's Nile", "Catwoman", "Where Bond Began", "In Search of The Northern Lights", "Born To Be Wild", amongst many others.
Lumley is also a keen activist and charity fund raiser. Best known for her hard work towards the Gurkha Justice Campaign, she has also supports a number of other charities, including: Survival International, Tree Aid, Compassion in World Farming, Carers International and the Prince's Trust. She is patron of many more, including the Peter Pan Moat Brae Trust and Friends of Kadzinuni.
In 2011 Lumley was nominated for a Tony Award for her performance on stage as the Princess in Matthew Warchus's La Bete which ran in the West End and Broadway. Other stage credits include Trevor Nunn's The Lion in Winter, The Letter, Who Will I Be Tomorrow, The Revengers Comedies, Vanilla, Hedda Gabler, The Cherry Orchard, Private Lives , An Ideal Husband and Blithe Spirit to name but a few. She has written six books, has a son, two granddaughters and a husband, and couldn't be happier as her life is indeed absolutely fabulous.
She is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and was awarded an OBE in the 1995 New Years Honours.
