Sonthar Gyal grew up among shepherds in China’s Qinghai province. Having studied at the Beijing Film Academy, he became one of the most outstanding members of the first generation of Tibetan filmmakers, with titles including Dbus lam gyi nyi ma (The Sun Beaten Path, 2011), with which he competed at the Locarno Festival, Gtsangbo (River, 2015), presented in the Generation Kplus section at the Berlin Festival and Ala Changso (2018), winner of the Jury Grand Prix and the Best Screenplay Award at the Shanghai Festival.
