At the age of 18, John Kon Kelei flees the civil war-stricken south of Sudan. He seeks asylum in Holland, which is not granted. By coincidence, he gets the leading part in Eugenie Janssen's feature film Tussenland, which wins a Tiger Award at the 2002 International Film Festival Rotterdam. During the making of Tussenland, Kelei is awaiting the result of his appeal to a higher court. In the 'meantime', he shoots his document, which is midway between a visual diary and a video letter to his people, the Dinkas. Kelei immediately comments on his observations, which lends the documentary a direct and candid character. With his captivating interviewing style and sense of humour, he scrutinises the country he longs to stay in. (Nederlands Film Festival)
