Sunder Nagri means Beautiful City. However, it is really a small working class colony on the outskirts of Delhi, the capital of India. Most families living here are originally from a community of weavers. But in the last ten years, the world has broken into their lives. Globalisation is gradually destroying the handloom tradition. These people have no other possibility, but to cope with change as well as reinvent themselves to eke out a living. The City Beautiful is the story of two families struggling to make sense of a world which keeps pushing them to the margins. Radha and Bal Krishan are at a critical point in their relationship. Bal Krishan is underemployed and constantly cheated. Nevertheless he strongly disapproves of Radha going out to work. However, through all their ups and downs they never loose their sense of humour. Shakuntla and Hira Lal hardly speak. They live under one roof with their children but are locked in their own sense of personal tragedies. Their ability to communicate has been broken by global developments that are too overwhelming to truly grasp. (DOK.fest München)
