When Serving Years Go Past is made up of two parts. The film starts when young Levente Fülöp has been working for two years for his boss, ‘Uncle’ Jànos. He ended up here because his parents were no longer able to support him. He works hard on the farm to earn money for his alcoholic and aggressive father, his mother and his seven brothers and sisters who remained at home. ‘I don’t miss home’, he says, but when he crawls under a horse blanket on the kitchen bench, he longs for his family. In part two, three years later, Levente has been reunited with his elder brother Csaba, who has been working outside the house since early childhood, and with his now re-married mother. The two boys realise that life does not have much to offer them anymore. They dream of owning a farm and of being reunited with their siblings. The kids were placed outside the parent’s home, but their perspectives are better: at least, they go to school. The two boys’ accounts – unmistakably brothers, when seeing them stride through picturesque scenery – alternate with interviews with the parents and Uncle Jànos. This is a stunning depiction of the hard labour in the Hungarian countryside. (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam)
