The Bolivian Jac Avila, who lives in New York, made his feature film-début Krik? Krak! Tales of a Nightmare from a fascination and love for Haitian culture. The style and montage are very remarkable because they are based on a mysterious way of story-telling, the so-called Krik? Krak! method. This way of telling a story was designed by the slaves who applied it to make plans for their liberation. In this film, Avila follows an unsuspecting woman who, being immersed in an age- old tradition of Voodoo religion, suddenly gets entangled in a mystical web woven by one of the corrupted Voodoo priests. With sinister skill he weakens this woman's religious belief until there is nothing left but a powerless weapon in resisting the ruling dynasty. He succeeds in doing this by confronting her with the past in a horrific way. She tries desperately to escape from the magic which is being exerted upon her. With his film Avila goes for the roots of Haitian consciousness and, thus, tries to comprehend the context in which Duvalier' s dictatorship could hold out for such a long time, and why after there is still no real democracy and personal freedom.
