Nach dem Verbüßen einer Haftstrafe kehrt der Profi-Kartenspieler Frankie Machine in sein Viertel zurück. Hier wird er bereits von seinen alten Kumpanen erwartet: Schwiefka, der illegale Poker-Turniere organisiert, und Louie, der mit Drogen handelt und einst auch Frankie in die Heroinsucht trieb. Seit dem Knast ist Frankie clean - und er will es auch bleiben. Doch es dauert nicht lange, bis er unter dem Einfluss von Schwiefka und Louie rückfällig wird. Immer tiefer gerät er in einen Strudel aus Drogensucht, Glücksspiel und Kriminalität. Erst mit Hilfe seiner alten Freundin Molly scheint es ihm zu gelingen, endgültig aus dem Milieu auszubrechen.
