For 15 years, Azim and his family have been living in Iran as Afghan refugees. Now his brother is about to illegally enter Germany. Enraging Azim, however, he goes back on his promise to bring their aging mother along, leaving her in Tehran. When she is also diagnosed with diabetes and in urgent need of a kidney transplant, Azim – having no rights in Iran and facing an almost hostile bureucracy – has a desperate and seemingly insoluble dilemma on his hands. Rona, Azim’s mother is a harrowing exile drama about the impossible situation shared by many Afghans around the world in our time. (Göteborg Film Festival)
