„Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert“ ist ein opulent gefilmter Konzertabend der Rockoper von Andrew Lloyd Webber und Tim Rice. Die Story veranschaulicht und dramatisiert die letzten sieben Tage im Leben von Jesus Christus mit den Mitteln der Popmusik. Erzählt wird die Geschichte aus der Perspektive von Judas, der mit dem wachsenden Erfolg von Jesus bei seinen Anhängern misstrauisch wird. Als Jesus im Tempel die Geldwechsler zur Rede stellt, wendet sich Judas gegen seinen Lehrer und setzt tragische Ereignisse in Gang. Ein All-Star-Cast mit John Legend als Jesus Christus, Sara Bareilles als Maria Magdalena, Brandon Victor als Judas und Alice Cooper als König Herodes spielen vor der Kulisse eines Off-Theaters in Brooklyn. This modern take on the legendary rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar did not exactly impress me. Never mind stage production and sci-fi costumes, as unfortunately, I couldn't stomach the desperate vocal performances. I was horrified the moment Brandon Victor Dixon sang for the first time as Judas. John Legend as Jesus didn't do much for me either. Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene was a bit better, but I was disappointed that her vocal expression did not show any tenderness. I liked Alice Cooper the best. I can’t really give this a good review because I’ve seen it done better. Although Brandon Victor Dixon somewhat redeemed his reputation with a successful final performance. (60%)
