Marcel is 42 years old and works as a social educator in Munich. Director Juliane Schuhler has accompanied him with her camera ever since his first day at school when he was a seven-year old boy. Even back then he was a fighter and wouldn’t be intimidated by anything. And until this very day he has been fighting injustice and arbitrariness. As a child he suffered under his single mother’s authoritarian upbringing. He often got into trouble for his insubordinate and unadjusted behaviour. As a teenager he discovered the Scottish educationalist A. S. Neill and was fascinated by his antiauthoritarian Summerhill School. He braved many obstacles and finally realised his dream: he studied pedagogy and became himself an educator. Today, Marcel is the father of two little girls. On his elder daughter’s first day of school, what he wishes most is for her to get the educational opportunities that he so bitterly missed out on. Marcel – Ein Kämpfchen, das wär’ schön is a long-term story that provides a deep insight into the evolution of a child who was considered unadjusted into an adult man who still fights for children’s freedom and justice, now setting an example for many.
