Today, University Hospitals is on the forefront of advancing medicine through research & leadership in innovation. By bringing new drugs to market, developing young physician scientists and performing new clinical trials to battle cancer everyday, it is shaping Cleveland to be the medical capital of the world. From the very beginning of the hospital 150 years ago, the goal has always been to meet the healthcare needs of its community; to be a place where the sick and underserved could go for medical assistance. That patient population has evolved over time, but University Hospitals sticks to a key principle established by the founders – to serve everyone. Through history, it’s ability to provide quality care is a reflection of the commitment the community gives in return. It would not be where it is today without the support of philanthropic minded people. We have learned through time that it takes more than just doctors and nurses to care for the sick and unfortunate, but an entire community giving of its time and talent. That is where discovery and advancement come from. Healing a community takes a community, and northeast Ohio is fortunate to have a culture of support established many years ago by compassionate people who wanted to make a difference. This is the story of how the University Hospitals health system came to be. How different charitable institutions, which were once separate entities, came together to create one unified medical establishment to address the needs of a community. How the principles of the early founders stand true through time and serve as the foundation for what University Hospitals is today. It’s the story of forward thinking, compassionate people.
