Before the opening up of the former Eastern European States and before the pressures of globalisation were made a reality, the inhabitants of Vuolijoki, Finland lived an uncomplicated life. The iron mines provided their income until demands for the raw material faded but the resourceful villagers founded ’North Star’, a factory that built train carriages. Their most important client was the USSR. Things changed and the world altered. The factory became owned by a Spanish company. The future of their work and their village hangs in the balance, battered by the onset of global markets, EU regulations and the competition to drive prices lower. Nonetheless, the ever resilient Finns decide to take matters into their own hands. The workforce was going to fight back for the 1500 jobs that would potentially be lost if the Factory closed. They give up their pay and a delegation goes to meet the Minister for Transport and the Finnish Prime Minister hoping that the state will uphold their cause. The North Star follows the discussions and meetings as decisions are made. Whilst, due to the efforts of the municipal manager, sauna products become the symbol for the fight to boost the country’s economy and a means to get under the skin of the Finnish people themselves.
