The core of this haunting reflection on war, land, the Bible, and filmmaking is a portrait of Revital Ohayon, an Israeli filmmaker and mother killed in a terrorist act on a kibbutz near the West Bank. Director Lynne Sachs creates a film essay on the violence of the Middle East by exchanging letters and images with her Israeli friend Nir Zats. Together, they reveal Revital's story through her films, news reports, and interviews, culminating in heartbreaking footage of children discussing the violence they've witnessed and an unforgettable visit with Ohayon's grieving family. Avoiding easy political polarizations, States of UnBelonging takes viewers on a journey to ponder issues of identity, political crisis, and the hope for union in the Middle East. The film is also greatly enriched by its soundtrack, featuring original compositions by some of New York's best and brightest avant-garde musicians. (Doc Alliance Films)
