The protagonist in this story, which takes us back to the final years of the 19th century, is Nyilas Misi, a pupil at the top of his class at a boarding school in Debrecen. The boy takes on a job to make some pocket money. He reads to Mr. Pósalaky, a blind man, out of a newspaper, and also gives lessons to Sanyika, a lazy little boy in the Doroghy family, which now lives in dire straits, and whose only hope left is Sanyika. Misi is a silent admirer of Bella, Sanyika's nice-looking sister, courted by Török János, a railway officer. At the request of Pósalaky, Misi bets the numbers the old man has seen in his dream to play on lottery. They win, but Török swaps the receipts and elopes with Bella. Misi gets into trouble and is cross-examined by the malevolent members of the school's teaching staff. He keeps the truth to himself in defence of Bella, not telling his teachers about the lovers having turned to Bella's aunt, a countess, to obtain financial support for their family. The merciless teachers keep questioning the little boy until he faints. He is eventually cleared of the accusations by the countess' letter. (Verleiher-Text)
