Wegen einer wissenschaftlichen Formel geht der amerikanische Physiker Michael Armstrong (Paul Newman) nach Ostberlin. Arbeitet er von nun an für das kommunistische Regime? Seine Verlobte Sarah (Julie Andrews), die ihm heimlich hinter den "Eisernen Vorhang" folgt, glaubt, dass er ein Verräter ist. In Wirklichkeit will Armstrong nur sein Raketenprojekt beenden, um dann wieder aus der DDR fliehen zu können. Das gestaltet sich jedoch schwieriger als gedacht. Denn als der misstrauische Stasi-Offizier Gromek (Wolfgang Kieling) Armstrongs wahre Absichten durchschaut, findet sich das Paar inmitten einer gefährlichen Verfolgungsjagd wieder. Der Plan droht zu scheitern. (3sat)
