The industrial magnate Erwin Voss loves Evelyn Gebhart, who comes from a modest background. She shares his feelings and agrees to marry him, although a war injury makes him incapable of “being more than a companion to her.” Soon Evelyn realizes that affection and wealth cannot compensate for the lack of sexual fulfillment. In the film’s prolog, Louise Fleck lets the pioneer of sexual science, Magnus Hirschfeld, have his say. For the cinematic realization, she used an optical printer for the first time – for example, to condense the individual stages of the honeymoon with the shortest cuts – which also impressively demonstrates the filmmaker’s technical sophistication.
