To paraphrase a story from a literary classic: "I can tell you something about the elephant, but you can also just take a look at it." This is a metaphor for ''free" schools, which emphasise student autonomy and learning from experience. The students themselves decide what they will learn and help create school rules. If you are bored in class you can go play soccer. The first such school was founded in 1901 by a group of anarchists in Barcelona; today, there are more than 260 of them around the world. With the help of other enthusiasts, Alex has decided to establish a free school in New Jersey. In this black-and-white film, the filmmaker gives us a close-up view of the school's first turbulent year. (One World)
