In 2010, Danish filmmaker Miki Mistrati made the disturbing documentary The Dark Side of Chocolate. It revealed the shocking practices on cocoa plantations in Côte d'Ivoire, where children – often smuggled from one of the many poor countries in Africa – are used for slave labour. The film attracted a considerable response, and under pressure from consumers large chocolate manufacturers promised to rectify the situation. How many of the skilfully presented projects aimed to improve the situation of local communities really are beneficial and how many of the proclamations are nothing but lies and empty promises? Mistrati tries to answer these questions in his new investigative documentary, and the result is no less shocking. (One World)
