Authentic, uninhibited without being indecent: the gaze that director Lizzie Borden points at a small group of Manhattan sex workers in Working Girls remains as convincing as ever. Without judgment, Borden looks at the day-to-day life of the employees of a brothel. We are introduced to their clients, to their boss – but above all to the routine: the repetition and the boredom which, in the end, offer us a down-to-earth representation of their profession. The potential sensationalism of the premise leaves room for a skillful dissection of power relations within the workplace in a capitalist context. (Cinéma Moderne)
